Herb Cart

***Herb Cart Training for 2017 is currently full***

Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 12.31.46 PMThe Herb Cart is a mobile clinic providing free, herbal care to communities in need around the Atlanta area. We serve at a variety of locations, such as city parks, at soup kitchens, and community centers.

The Herb Cart Program also serves as a training opportunity for emerging herbalists.  Many herbalists have a solid foundation in herbal studies or even experience working with their friends and family but feel nervous offering these services to the general public.

The Herb Cart was constructed to provide a safe and supportive vessel, with guidance, resources, and partnerships, for you to begin your journey into clinical work. If you have been looking for a way to put your herbal knowledge to work, if you are looking for a chance to serve your community, then here is a chance to do BOTH!!

If you are interested in working on the Herb Cart, you must complete an Herb Cart Training in addition to the other requirements as described below. Once you have completed the process, we welcome you to sign-up and serve at the various clinics we schedule throughout the year.

Cart volunteers must meet the following requirements:

*Have a solid foundation in herbal medicine acquired through either program study, apprenticeship, or rigorous self-study. We use a broad range of remedies on the cart, and it is important to have a general understanding of these herbs before undertaking an Herb Cart Training. Please see the Herb Cart Service Manual on the Resources page to see an example of the Materia Medica we utilize.

*CPR AND First Aid Certified within the last 2 years. This can be through any number of organizations, such as the Red Cross, American Heart Association, etc. This must be completed prior to attending an Herb Cart Weekend Training Session. Preferably, attend a Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder course like those offered by Landmark Learning and NOLS.

*Attend an Herb Cart Weekend Training Session (Herbal First Aid, Herb Cart Protocol, etc.) Each training session is limited to between 6 and 8 participants. Contact Lorna to register and make payment arrangements.

*Train at the Harriet Tubman Foot Care Clinic at least twice (Safety and Sanitation, Clinical Flow, Anti-Oppressive Practice, etc.) This clinic meets every Monday afternoon at the Mercy Community Church.

*Attend a Power and Privilege Workshop offered through the Herbalista Health Network.

*Demonstrate herbal competence, compassion & pragmatism as a health worker. Please note, participation in the program is at the discretion of the Herbalista Crew.

*To maintain active volunteer status you must attend at least one Herb Cart Maintenance Day each year.

Here the Herb Cart is serving up herbal remedies in Woodruff Park, located in downtown Atlanta.  We often serve there alongside the Food Not Bombs crew.  The Food Not Bombs Movement finds inspiration in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King who said “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.” They bring a hot meal and music to the park every Sunday and we are honored to join them as often as we can!
